leaner, more productive company.

Even China couldn’t resist this! The state investment agency of China has announced plans to invest $3 billion in US private equity firm Blackstone in a landmark deal for the industry and the government. The agency, which was only established in March, will acquire the stake at 95.5% of the price to be set in Blackstone’s flotation, which is planned for later this year. The purchase of a stake, which will be just under 10%, values the whole of Blackstone at $30 billion. The Chinese government typically invests most of the reserves in more secure though lower-yielding US Treasury bonds.

Illegal activities

Poverty and poaching go hand in hand. Is it realistic to hope for an end to poaching as long as a sizeable number of people in the country remain poor?
Given a choice, most people will not indulge in illegal activities. Poor people living on the fringes of good wildlife habitat oft en turn to poaching, or assisting professional poachers, not because they want to but because otherwise their families would starve. And of course there are also ‘bad hats’ in every community and society to encourage this. We have let down forest fringe dwellers by not off erring them alternatives and opportunities to better their situation. Corruption plays a large part in this, for even where there are schemes to help these communities, they oft en do not benefit the people they are supposed to. In Ranthambhor, for instance, a tiger poacher confessed that he had used the money he made to buy gift s for his family and to organise a puja for his dead grandmother’s soul.

TCS

Down now, but TCS has immense potential to bounce back among the crème in the 4Ps B&M rankings soon
An important player in the booming IT sector, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) boasts of possessing more than 70,000 associates worldwide. Courtesy its fledging state-of the- art consulting services and enviable Global Network Delivery Model, TCS recorded revenue earnings of a staggering $4.3 billion for FY07. Agnello Dias, National Creative Director, J. Walter Thompson’s attributes TCS’s success to the company managing to outlast prevailing market trends and ride over them. “They were steadfast with their vision irrespective of the circumstance,” he says. Looking to strengthen its position in the global market, TCS launched “Experience Certainty” during the last quarter, which made it the first Indian corporate to come out with a global branding and marketing campaign.

Choco-slaves

Ivory Coast’s child slaves...
Passing through the plantations of Ivory Coast, the commonest sight is an Ivorian child loaded with a machete. The country blessed with almost half of the world’s Cocoa production (43%), also has numerous child labourers that work in abysmal conditions. Human Rights Watch has confirmed that more than 15,000 children work in Cocoa plantations of Cote d’ivoire that get treated virtually as slaves forced to work day and night.

Children silently endure beating, psychological abuses and even threat of death. A report by ILO has revealed that more than 90% of Cote d’Ivoire Cocoa plantations use forced labour. The Human Rights Watch has similarly thrown up numerous cases to show how traffickers lure children from their homes with promises of high quality education and life before selling them to slave markets in neighbouring countries. Ironically, buyers of this blood drenched product are mostly the corporations like Nestlé, Archer Daniels Midland, and Cargill that vouch for human rights. Crushed then in the vicious circle is the childhood of millions of deprived souls.

India Fashion Week

These ‘fuller’ displays help change the followed norm that super skinny women are fashionable. Supermodel Michelle Innes says, “In the India Fashion Week, there are hardly any ultra-thin models, and cases like anorexia are hardly prevalent with Indian models given our rich healthy diet, so thankfully we have less to worry about”. Well, perhaps now our little celebrated Indian models with their voluptuous bodies will lead the way on fashion-ramps of the world!!

Ashamed, guilty & out!!!

It seems that CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are out to destroy the credibility of markets. It’s simple pure greed, which drives the corporate leaders to indulge in malpractices. The latest culprit this time is from South Korea – Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman, Chung Mong Koo–held guilty for embezzlement to the tune of $100 million to feed the ever hungry politicians and to stuff his own pockets. The Seoul Central Court has awarded the business leader 3 years imprisonment for the white-collar crime. The development does not augur well for the Korean economy which is desperately awaiting a better news to lift up its spirits.

Campaign

Bailouts, ad-campaigns and of course, M. Damodaran (who took over as the chairman of UTI) were some of the changes that swept though the entity (and thankfully so!) during the post-crisis years. UTI mutual funds (was established in 2003 after the repeal of UTI Act 1963), however, endeavoured to re-establish itself and spent crores on promotional campaigns (in addition to M. Damodaran, the new Chairman’s efforts to reassure the investor community) in order to change the perception of the investors. And boy, did it succeed! The recent past has only seen public trust rising in its favour. One recent campaign which stands out in this respect is the ‘UTI ke desh mein aapka swagat hai’ campaign, which worked wonders for it.

    PepsiCo

It’s been 42 years that Pepsi has been around. If we take a trip down memory lane, then although Pepsi Cola Company was founded in 1898, it only became PepsiCo when it merged with Frito Lay in 1965. Here’s a list of the others who lead from the top. Herman W Lay served as PepsiCo’s first chairman between 1965 and 1971, Donald Kendall between 1971 and 1986, Wayne D Calloway between 1986 and 1996, Roger A Enrico between 1996 and 2001, and then Reinemund took over in 2001. In the statement released by Pepsi, Nooyi said: “PepsiCo is on a sound strategic course with solid momentum thanks to Steve’s (Reinemund) leadership, and along with every Pepsi- Co associate, I’m looking forward to building on the lasting legacy credited to him, Roger, Wayne, Don, & Herman.”

    Cost of communication

Anti-parties claimed that it would increase the cost of communication. Not only this, the issue of Net Neutrality which brought up questions like whether AT&T would be allowed to charge a premium from Yahoo! and Google for transporting contents on the net, was thick in the air. But AT&T finally managed to get through the bush of objections (offering many concessions). And today the only question remains – has it become unbeatable? Well, one cannot afford to overlook the presence of Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Comm. and EarthLink. Between themselves, internet service providers, and wireless companies, BellSouth has lost 3.6 million access lines over the past half decade.

    Power Generation

Apart from theft , the power generation has also been at the lower end with estimates suggest almost 12% lesser supply than the demand in India. These figures ably explain as to why much of India remains without electricity. It must be highlighted here that only 44% of rural households have access to power and the national average is 56%. On another front, with India having to import nearly 70% of the total oil consumption, it’s choices have been limited. Lack of thrust then on a pile of 240 billion tonnes of estimated coal reserves then defies logic.

    Important Factor

“It is too early to comment, but I think it is one more medium to touch base with the consumers. But, placement is an important factor,” says Priti. Flytech seems to have thought that out already. As per the masterplan, hoardings will be placed in areas where the traffic is sluggish and jams are a common phenomenon in the peak hours. On a lighter note, at least those excruciating traffic jams will be a little less painful with these!

And more so, if you were only to know that she started her career in 1979, working as a rookie anchor in a TV programme of Japan Broadcasting Corporation called Kaigai Weekly (taking almost thirteen years to become the main newscaster for another World Business Satellite program in TV Tokyo). But entrepreneurship is what Tomoyo has become an incarnate of in Japan, and even across the globe, especially given the most hitting fact that she is the first woman, in a highly male dominated social- order, to lead the massive Japanese Group, streamlining Sanyo’s business offerings & rebuilding its global image.

    Increasing Real Incomes

New opportunities will help increasing real incomes which will in turn increase aspirations for cars. The vicious cycle created by this belt will help in selling its own produce to its own dependents – a classic example of self contained economic sustainability. Says Baig, “employment in an industrial belt leads to development of secondary infrastructure such as housing and shelter, thereby, improving standards.” This is similar to the economic sufficiency of the Tarai region, also standing as a testament of the changing nature of India’s economic achievements. India’s auto belt is surely doing it’s bit in helping the nation break the shackles of an agrarian economy and replace it with a modern hub that this region is becoming.

    Newspaper Readers In The Capital

Purie added that though the newspaper would be initially launched in Delhi, more editions in other cities cannot be ruled out later. There has been a buzz in the market for quite a while now about how the group’s existing afternoon paper Today is going to be revamped and re-launched. So will it take the shape of that new paper that Purie was talking about? No one knows yet. But given the group’s formidable reputation in the media business (print as well as television), it will certainly be something to look forward to. Guess for newspaper readers in the capital – more news is good news!

    NOKIA LEADERSHIP

With all players fighting on a different differentiability factor, the sector is no longer dominated by a single player and suddenly Nokia finds itself in a spot of bother surrounded by aggressive competition. But will this competitive scenario finally dethrone the Finnish giant? Explains Sridhar T. Pai, a leading telecom analyst & CEO, Tonse Telecom, “The combined might of Motorola, Samsung & LG can certainly cause a dent in the Nokia leadership, but do not underestimate Nokia. They have gone far beyond feature phones and are focusing on the one thing that matters – the consumer.”
